Mitch Hill

Mitch Hill: Chief Executive Officer

Mitch Hill brings more than 30 years of executive leadership experience in high-growth technology companies. He previously served as CEO of Avanade, a technology services joint venture between Accenture and Microsoft, and was responsible for launching the company in 2000. As the founding CEO of Avanade, he led the team that created a billion-dollar technology services firm successfully providing infrastructure, development and business solutions built on Microsoft technology. Hill was at Accenture from 1980 to 2000 serving in roles including developer, technical architect and program manager. His last role at Accenture was managing partner for Accenture's electronics and high tech business in the western United States.

Adam Jacob

Adam Jacob: Chief Customer Officer

Adam Jacob is a co-founder of Opscode and the creator of Chef. Prior to Opscode, he founded HJK Solutions, an automated infrastructure consultancy. During two years at HJK, he built new infrastructures for 15 different startups. Including his time at HJK, Adam has 13 years of experience as a systems administrator, systems architect, and tools developer. He has been responsible for large production infrastructures, internal corporate automation, and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance efforts.

Christopher Brown

Christopher Brown: Chief Technology Officer

Christopher Brown joins Opscode from Microsoft, where he was a Director of Engineering for the Edge Computing Network within Global Foundation Services. Prior to Microsoft, Christopher was a Founding Member, Architect, and Lead Developer for Amazon.com's Elastic Compute Cloud ("EC2"). Christopher has 18 years of software engineering and leadership experience and holds several patents in the areas of Internet routing, VM/runtime hosting, content delivery and cloud computing.

Paul Edelhertz

Paul Edelhertz: VP of Services

Paul Edelhertz brings to Opscode a wealth of experience in building, scaling and leading software and technology and service businesses. Prior to joining Opscode, Paul led the development of world-class services and platform teams for key early stage technologies including electronic design automation (ECAD), wireless applications and infrastructure, analytics, online advertising, digital media and medical operations/imaging, at companies including Empath, Santa Cruz Networks, Zorap, Orb Networks, and Zamba. Earlier in his career, Edelhertz spent 12 years at global consulting firm Accenture, where he served as a senior executive responsible for directing and managing process improvement and IT planning projects for clients throughout the US, Europe and South America.

Barry Crist

Barry Crist: VP of Enterprise

Barry Crist has more than 20 years of experience in driving enterprise customer success and adoption with both open source and DevOps software solutions. Prior to joining Opscode, he was an Executive-in-Residence at Ignition Partners, an Opscode investor. He was previously CEO of Likewise, a company with a strong open source to enterprise go-to-market model that had wide industry reach including OEM agreements with VMware, Dell, HP, Riverbed, and EMC. Likewise was acquired by EMC Isilon in September 2012. Prior to Likewise, Crist served as Vice President of the Application Management group at Mercury, now a division of HP, where he grew North American sales from less than $1 million to more than $75 million. Crist led enterprise sales organizations at Network Associates (now McAfee) and was in various sales, technical, and international roles at Apple.

George Moberly

George Moberly: VP of Solutions

George Moberly is a 25-year industry veteran with product leadership experience in infrastructure automation and a strong track record in delivering enterprise software solutions. Moberly previously served as director of product management at F5 Networks, where he was responsible for overall strategy and delivery of F5's management and orchestration product offerings. Prior to his tenure at F5, he was vice president of product management at CloudSwitch, where he was responsible for driving products from initial concept to market as a founding member of the company. Moberly also served as director of service automation product management at BMC Software, which acquired BladeLogic. At BladeLogic, he was responsible for product management for the BladeLogic Suite leading up to and following the successful 2007 initial public offering.

Jay Wampold

Jay Wampold: VP of Marketing

Jay joins Opscode to lead outbound marketing and communications. He previously served as Senior Director of Marketing and Communications for Isilon Systems, which was recently acquired by EMC Corporation for more than two billion dollars. At Isilon, Jay led outbound marketing and was instrumental in creating the scale-out storage market and played a key role in the company's successful IPO. Prior to Isilon, he was a Partner and Senior Vice President of New York-based SS+K Communications, where he ran the agency's technology practice. Prior to SS+K, Jay was Director of Communications for RealNetworks, serving a key role in creating and leading the Internet media delivery market, and helping to guide the company through its IPO.

Bryan Hale

Bryan Hale: VP of Online Services

Bryan Hale joins Opscode from Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ), a premier early stage venture capital firm. Prior to joining DFJ, Bryan worked in the Corporate Development group at salesforce.com where he led valuation and due diligence efforts for several of the Company's first acquisitions. Previously, Bryan was in the Global Technology Group at UBS Investment Bank.

Pauly Comtois

Pauly Comtois: Director of Operations

Pauly is a seasoned support and operations leader, having spent the last 15 years building, developing and leading high performing Support, IT and Operations teams in rapidly growing organizations. Most recently, he held the Director of Operations role at Silverpop, where their industry-leading SaaS offering delivers on-demand digital marketing. He has been responsible for all aspects of infrastructure planning and development, including maintaining alignment with the business teams of his organizations.

Kevin Knoepp

Kevin Knoepp: Director of Engineering

Kevin Knoepp brings 20 years of experience as a hands-on technology leader with a focus on mission-critical and scalable internet-based systems. His positions have encompassed product management, design, architecture, engineering, operations, and management, and he has extensive experience bridging technology with business strategy, from being a founder at software start-ups to senior positions at public companies.

Carolyn Scurrell

Carolyn Scurrell: Director of Finance

Carolyn has 25 years of experience across a multitude of industries and functions. Most notably, she was the Director of Finance at Real Networks and helped guide that company through $50M in private financings and a successful IPO. Since then, she has run finance at venture-backed companies such as ViAir and Lockerz, and consulted for NetMotion Wireless, Scout Analytics, CarDomain and others.


Carolyn is a graduate of Xavier University and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith: Director of Engineering

Over the course of his 16 year career, Kevin has helped mentor and lead technical teams at such companies as Red Hat, Lulu, Heroku, and Basho Technologies. His technical positions have been similarly diverse – from Team Lead and Senior Software Engineer to DBA and Network Administrator. Kevin discovered Erlang in 2006, saw its promise for building scalable high performance systems, and has been a strong proponent of the language ever since. In his spare time, Kevin is also the author of the Pragmatic Programmers' popular "Erlang In Practice" screencast series.

Jesse Robbins

Jesse Robbins: Founder

Jesse Robbins is a co-founder and served as Opscode's founding CEO. Prior to Opscode, he worked at Amazon.com with a title of "Master of Disaster" where he was responsible for website availability for every property bearing the Amazon brand. He has served as creator & founding co-chair of the Velocity Web Performance & Operations Conference and contributes to the O'Reilly Radar.

Adam Jacob

Barry Steinglass

Barry Steinglass: Founder

Barry Steinglass is a co-founder of Opscode and a veteran manager of software product development teams. Prior to founding Opscode, he was Senior Partner at HJK Solutions, an infrastructure automation consultancy. Before that, he was an early member of the Xbox Platform team at Microsoft, where he helped create the Xbox, Xbox Live, the Xbox 360, and the Xbox 360 HD DVD player. Before that, he was a part of the team that delivered Exchange Server 2000, where he was responsible for the server administration APIs. He has broad experience across many types of products and customers, including enterprise server products, consumer electronics, software services, and developer platforms.

Nathan Haneysmith

Nathan Haneysmith: Founder

Nathan Haneysmith is a co-founder of Opscode and a seasoned system architect and leader of technical support teams. Prior to Opscode, he was a founder at HJK Solutions, an automated infrastructure consultancy. Before that, Nathan was the Linux Platform Lead for IBM e-Business Web Hosting and supported environments for a variety of high tech startups as well as Fortune 500 companies. His background includes a wide range of enterprise and open source platforms and products.

Board of Directors

John Connors

John Connors (Partner, Ignition)

John Connors joined Ignition as a Partner in 2005. He invests principally in business software and services.

Prior to joining Ignition, John spent sixteen years at Microsoft Corporation in several strategic roles. From January 2000 to April 2005 he was senior vice president of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer. John also held a variety of positions including vice president of the Worldwide Enterprise Group, and vice president and Chief Information Officer (CIO). Before serving as CIO, he held a number of positions within and outside finance, including Corporate Controller, General Manager of worldwide financial operations, Director of business operations of Microsoft's European headquarters in Paris, and Director of business operations of the Worldwide Sales and Support Strategy Group.

John is a member of the Board of Directors of Nike, FiREapps, Scout Analytics, Datasphere, Korrio, Motif Investing, Splunk, Parse and Tier 3 and AppSense. He was also a Board member of Heroku which was sold to Salesforce.com in 2010, Recruiting.com which was sold to Jobing.com in 2010, and Xensource which was sold to Citrix in 2007.

John received his BA in accounting from the University of Montana. He also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Montana.

Bill Bryant

William Bryant (Venture Partner, Draper Fisher Jurvetson)

William K. (Bill) Bryant has had early and instrumental involvement in over twenty leading software and Internet companies, as a founder, senior executive, investor and Board Member. After serving as founding Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Visio (now part of Microsoft Corporation) in the early 1990s, Bill went on to found Netbot (which built the first comparison shopping agent for the Internet, Jango, as well as the first metasearch engine, Metacrawler, prior to being acquired by Excite) as its President; Qpass (www.qpass.com, acquired by Amdocs) where he served as CEO and later Chairman; Medio Systems (www.mediosystems.com) where he contines to serve as a Strategic Advisor; and 3Guppies (formerly Mixxer, www.3guppies.com), a market leader with over 4M members in the consumer mobile entertainment and community sector. In these founding capacities, Bill drove definition of the core product and market strategy; raised >$125M in venture capital; recruited senior management teams; and built customer, partner and channel relationships in launching software products, Internet and mobile services.

Previously, Bill was an early investor or Board member in nine other companies that were later acquired or went public, including Loudeye (Nokia), AEI Music (DMX/Liberty Media), Viafone (Extended Systems), Teamplate (Captaris), Exstatic Software (Xchange Applications), Throw (Excite), Singing Fish (Thomson/AOL); NearMe (Hands On Mobile) and WebRelevance (Medio).

Neeraj Agrawal

Neeraj Agrawal (General Partner, Battery Ventures)

Neeraj joined Battery in 2000 and invests in enterprise software/SaaS, technology-enabled services and Internet companies. He was a founding investor in BladeLogic (NASDAQ: BLOG, acquired by BMC). In addition to BladeLogic, Neeraj’s investments include Applimation (acquired by Informatica), Bazaarvoice (NASDAQ: BV), Brightree, Consona (acquired by Vista Equity Partners), Glassdoor, Guidewire Software (NASDAQ: GWRE), Internet Brands (acquired by Hellman & Friedman), LifeMed Media, Marketo, Mass Relevance, Omniture (acquired by Adobe), RealPage (NASDAQ: RP), Sprinklr, Tealium, VSS Monitoring (acquired by Danaher), and Wayfair (formerly CSN Stores).

Prior to Battery, Neeraj worked as a product manager at Real Networks, an operating executive at SkyTV, and a management consultant with Booz-Allen. Neeraj holds an Engineering degree in Computer Science from Cornell University as well as an MBA with honors from the Harvard Business School. He is a Charter Member of TiE, an active advisor to several local entrepreneurs, and was named to the Forbes Midas List, which ranks the top 100 venture capitalists around the world.
