Rhapsody

In the cloud, the volume goes to 11.

Rhapsody + Opscode build the IT infrastructure required to deliver music to a tremendous diversity of end-user devices.

The Challenge

Rhapsody is the leading provider of on-demand digital music in the United States, offering music fans the ability to explore more than 11 million songs through more touch-points than any other digital music service, including the Apple iPhone, iPod touch and Android mobile platform; and through devices from Vizio, SanDisk, HP, Sonos and Philips. Prior to using Opscode Hosted Chef, the Rhapsody systems management team would spend hours and days building out countless, static system images to support a large, diverse and ever changing infrastructure, necessitating the need for an automation solution.

The Solution

Rhapsody relies on Opscode Hosted Chef to automate a complex IT infrastructure required to deliver a highly reliable music service through a tremendous diversity of end-user devices, including desktop applications, browsers, music players, smart phones and home entertainment units. Using Opscode Hosted Chef and Chef, Rhapsody has turned infrastructure management into code, eliminating a complex set of manual tasks and replaced it with flexible and predictable Chef roles that can be applied and re-used to suit the needs of a dynamic infrastructure.

The Results

  • Unparalleled Service Reliability: Hosted Chef enables Rhapsody to create a consistent, reliable infrastructure capable of adapting on the fly to change and quickly healing from any error or issue, ensuring its customers can always access their music, anytime, anywhere.
  • Streamlined Infrastructure Management: With Hosted Chef, Rhapsody's team can manage its highly complicated infrastructure with just a few man hours per week, enabling everything from configuration to application delivery to be accomplished with minimal overhead.
"It is a business imperative of Rhapsody to deliver a seamless music experience to our subscriber base and requires that we manage nearly 300 different application server configurations in order to stream a music catalog of more than 11 million songs to dozens of different devices. Utilizing the Opscode platform has turned our greatest operational challenge into an operational advantage." Paul Vandegrift, Director of Vendor and Partner Management

Rhapsody is, quite simply, the ultimate digital jukebox. For $10 a month you can listen to whatever you want, whenever you want, on whatever gadget you choose, from the hottest new releases to our decades-spanning catalog of 14 million - yes, 14 million - songs.
